A Good Conversation
(Deus Adiutarum)

Please, my dear, have a seat.  Can I offer you a drink?
I know - aren't you excited - we both are on the brink.
The tea is brewing nicely, our minds are much more clear,
So I’m glad - yes, I'm so glad - that you finally made it here.

Would you like a crumpet?  They're made by scratch by me.
Diabetic?  They’re delicious and completely sugar free.
No?  That’s fine.  Just relax and please, tell me your sad tale.
Make it good.  Make it snappy, and leave out all the details.

Oh my heavens.

Your mother with cancer?  Your father, a gun?
Alone in the world?  Not even a son?
You poor, poor dear, I’ve got just the thing.
It might hurt a little, but never mind the sting.

Here you go.

In the syringe?  My dear, it's just the truth.
It’s time you learned.  You’re no longer a youth.
Nobody cares if you live or you die.
‘Cept yourself, your god, your insurance and I.

Now don’t be so down.  I told you, it’d hurt.
No need to be snotty.  No use to be curt.
Here have a crumpet.  They’re tasty, I swear.
No one ever promised this world would be fair.

But just take this cup, some tea for your strife,
Swallow the truth, then go on with your life.
Written in Tennyson's style, with a metanarrative created from the inner depths of the poem.

*Edit* I took ~sumants advice and changed the meter a bit. To add to the power of it being a metanarrative, I added one line of dialogue in between moments when the main character (i.e. the speaker) changes meter (or speaking pattern).

The meaning of your poem hit me quite hard, and combined with your light as cappucino froth tone, it was quite disconcerting. This is not a bad thing.

I enjoyed reading it.
